The maintenance on your bettas will depend upon the size of the container or tank that you keep your fish in . The smaller the tank the more often you will have to change the water. If you water is filtered this will give you an extra few days between water changes. If you keep your betta in anything above a 10 gallon tank then 20 % per week will be fine. Anything below that and you should really try to change 20% twice per week. Always ensure that you use aged water. I always add an indian almond leaf to the water when aging it.NEVER use water straight from the tap it will normally contain chemicals that may kill your fish and will definately kill the beneficial bacteria that you have built up in the tank. Age your water by leaving it to stand for a few days, you can also treat your tap water to take out harmful chemicals. There are lots of different treatments for water available at your local store. Remove water from the tank by syphoning and take the opportunity to remove waste for the bottom of the tank Try to add water of the same temperature to the tank so that the temp doesnt fluctuate. Remember the water that your fish live in is their habitat the cleaner the water the more healthy your fish will be. Neglect your water changes and you will end up with unhelathy dying and dead fish. Your fish will suffer from nitrate build up and this will cause stress and lead to all sorts of diseases. (Nitrogen cycle)
